Your step by step guide to start rallying.
STEP 1. COMPETITION LICENSE.
Contact Motorsport Ireland (www.motorsportireland.com) requesting their Introduction to Motorsport package which will explain what requirements are needed before you send away for your license. You will have to attend an Introduction to Motorsport day at a rally school which will also count towards an upgrade signature. Having passed all this and still interested in competing, your next step will take a little time and patience.
STEP 2. CHOOSING YOUR CAR.
Now is the time for an educated decision as to what will best suit your time and skills. There is plenty of second hand challenge spec cars for sale, any of the cars that have recently taken part in the challenge will be known to the challenge organizers. Check the For Sale page on the website. A quick phone call before viewing a car could save you a lot of time. If you have found one that suits, arrange a visit with our challenge sponsor Martisport (086 3850071) who will check over your car to make sure it complies with the regs. A new regulation is due to come into the challenge for 2009 where only cars with a challenge passport will be allowed to compete so call before you buy.
If you are a hands on type, then maybe building a car might suit you better. Choose a good road car as your base, making sure to drive it plenty before you strip it down. This way you will know what minor faults it might have and can be easy sorted when building into a rally car. Check out the For Sale page on the website for road cars for sale. This way you can build up your car as money allows, fitting the parts that are a requirement first, then the stronger competition parts.
STEP 3. RACEWARE.
With new regulations coming into the sport all the time, contact us to get the most up to date advice on clothing and helmets available. We deal with selected suppliers who offer discounts to competitors. We are also starting a savings scheme for registered competitors who can save money monthly or add any prizemoney won into the scheme. We will then purchase in bulk when the new directive comes in January 09.
STEP 4. TRAINING.
Driving and co driving tuition is given to any competitor who would like to gain knowledge of how to get the best out of their car on the stages. Workshop training is also given on how best to maintain your car between events. Event regulations, entry forms, recces and servicing are also covered, so you will be fully aware what lies ahead.
STEP 5. ENJOYMENT.
Rallying is one of the best and most enjoyable sports in the world, but like everything in life there is a proper way to go about things. In the Irish 205 Challenge we know we can help you go about it the right way to get maximum enjoyment.
